A |     (ECNS) -- China’s wild Asian elephant population has grown steadily in recent decades as conservation efforts improve habitats and reduce human-elephant conflicts.     Asian elephants in China are mainly found in Yunnan Province, particularly in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture and the cities of Pu’er and Lincang.        In 2021, a herd of wild elephants that traveled more than 1,400 kilometers attracted global attention and drew greater interest to China’s wildlife conservation efforts.    Yunnan has introduced a range of measures to promote coexistence between humans and Asian elephants, including habitat restoration, monitoring and early-warning systems, compensation for elephant-related losses, and the construction of protective facilities.    Through these efforts, China’s wild Asian elephant population has increased from about 150 in the 1980s to nearly 400 today, according to a report released by the National High-end Think Tank of Xinhua News Agency.    The report noted that China’s wild elephant population has continued to grow steadily, with five elephant calves born at Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley, an Asian elephant conservation and education site, in 2026.     China’s wildlife conservation efforts have also gained broader public support. On World Elephant Day, which fell on August 12, various activities were held across Yunnan to raise public awareness of elephant conservation.        On the same day, Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley held a special birthday celebration for Yangniu, an Asian elephant that was rescued and raised by humans after being abandoned by her herd as a newborn in 2015.    (By Helen Mo, intern Liu Shuangjing)                    。

B |     Washington, Oct 18 (UNI) The US says it agrees with Western allies that Iran's supply of explosive drones to Russia violates UN sanctions.
Kyiv was struck by so-called "kamikaze" drones on Monday, unleashed by Russia but believed to be Iranian-made.
The US agrees with the French and British assessment that the drones violate UN Security Council Resolution 2231, the US State Department said.
That resolution, linked to Iran's nuclear accord, bars Iranian transfers of certain military technologies.
Ukraine has identified the drones -- or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) -- as Iranian Shahed-136 weapons.
They are called kamikaze drones after the Japanese fighter pilots who flew suicide missions in World War II.
"It is our belief that these UAVs that were transferred from Iran to Russia and used by Russia in Ukraine are among the weapons that would remain embargoed under 2231," said Vedant Patel of the State Department.
Iran denies supplying them to Russia, but Patel said the US "exposed publicly that Russia has received drones from Iran, that this was part of Russia's plan to import hundreds of Iranian UAVs of various types".
He added that there was "extensive proof" of Russia's use of them in Ukraine.
Critical infrastructure was hit on Monday in Ukraine's Kyiv, Dnipro and Sumy regions, with electricity cut in hundreds of towns and villages, the Kyiv government said.
At least eight people were killed -- four in Kyiv and four in Sumy. The US said it would "hold (Russia) accountable for its war crimes."
Patel said the deepening alliance between Russia and Iran was something the whole world should see as a threat. Russia and Iran have provided key military support for President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war.
